The first and Reserve teams are both in action this Saturday, on what will be the last weekend of the 2007-08 season. Even
after this, there will still be one game to go, as the first team have a trip to Nailsworth to take on Shortwood
United Reserves under floodlights next Wednesday, but with the pressure now well and truly off, it is to be hoped that both
sides enjoy their last action of the campaign and sign off on a really positive note.
Mathematical certainty that the First team will be playing in Division One of the Northern Senior League again next season
was achieved last Saturday, when the point that was notably gained against Bishop’s Cleeve Reserves ensured that we
could not finish in the relegation places. This is testament to a very creditable second half of the season, during which
the side has shrugged off early season disappointments, as they adjusted to life at a higher level, and firmly established
themselves as a presence in Division One. If the form from late autumn onwards is replicated next season, further improvement
should be in evidence this time next year. In the mean time, this Saturday the team head down to the banks of the River Severn
to take on Sharpness, who have found themselves in the comfort zone that is mid table for most of the season. In the home
game, back in . Garry Lozynsky returns to the squad, back from his sabbatical fit and refreshed just in time for the last
two games of the season and replaces Simon Delaney, who is not available on Saturday
The Reserves play their final game of a truly excellent season at home to Charlton Rovers on Saturday, hoping to gain their
first win of the campaign over opponents who knocked them out of the GFA Junior Charity Cup back in October, as well as gaining
a share of the spoils following a 0-0 draw at Balcarras School in September. The side is already assured of its highest ever
League finish – last season’s fifth place will definitely be eclipsed as the team cannot finish lower than fourth
– but it will be very disappointing if they don’t secure the third spot that their form all season probably deserves.
To be denied, either Tewkesbury Dynamos – soon to be Apperley & Tewkesbury Dynamos – have to hope that the
Reserves fail to gain a point on Saturday whilst they beat both Whaddon United and FC Barometrics in their last two games,
or the Reserves themselves have to lose by 17 clear goals to Charlton Rovers, who would then overtake them by virtue of goal
difference. Equally unlikely, but something that can, possibly, be aimed for in a rather more positive sense, is the team
scoring the 14 goals that it needs to record a century for the season. The bad news for James Mole, in particular, is that
even if the team did manage this, and he scored all of them, he still wouldn’t end the season as top scorer. For this
final match of a momentous season, then, the seconds call up Kieran Bermingham from the thirds and also call on the services
of Jon Moss, Mike Thompson and Rich Gill, whilst Jamie Roberts will be aiming for the strikes that he needs to record 40 goals
in a season for the club for the first time.
