What if Star FC was "CF Estrella" and played
within spitting distance of the Copacabana? Well, for one thing, it would presumably be even more difficult, come kickoff
time, to persuade certain individuals that playing football should be their number one leisure time priority - but what
would the teamsheet look like every week? Not for the Brazilians the tedium of using names that were given at birth,
oh no, as soon as they step onto the football pitch, they adopt pseudonyms that, in their
very conception, are designed to make their owners heroic. Tostao, Gerson, Socrates, Zico - all nicknames that have
become household words worldwide.
So, what would our players be called if they were Brazilian? Well, thanks to a recently discovered web site,
at www.minimalsworld.net/BrazilName/brazilian.shtml, you need to wonder no longer. Quite what criteria are used by the perpetrators of this site to formulate the new names,
it is difficult to tell but, as you can see from the list of every player in our three squads, and their apparently equivalent
Brazilian names, many are pretty straightforward. It doesn't, for example, take a great deal of brain power to work
out how the Bermingham brothers New World nicknames were derived - even though, gratifyingly, they did all come out different -
and neither does it take a degree in quantum physics to see how they came up with "Fra" for Frank Ashworth. However,
others are rather more difficult to phathom and quite how "Dave Nottingham" became "Davandro Peres", or quite why James Mole
would ever agree to be known as "Felix Molson", is anybody's guess!!

It seems obvious that some people are much more likely to approve of their Brazilian alter-egos than others but it would
also seem probable that one or two might be completely non-plussed by their change of identity. For example, Garry Lozynsky
becoming "Ga". To most, this would seem to be eerily appropriate, almost more Forest-of-Dean than Rio but, unfortunately,
no matter how many times you try it, putting in "Garry" as the first name and "Lozynsky" as the surname does not produce
the nickname "Pele"!! Strangely enough, though, you don't get "Pele" if you put in "Edson Orantes do Nascimiento"
either!!!
Anyway, for one week, and one week only, here is this week's teamsheet, Brazilian style!!
