The
Reserve team finally got their season off the ground at Woodmancote’s Bushcombe Close ground with an excellent victory
that completely eradicated the memories of their defeat by the same opponents by the same score 6 days before. Just
as with the previous meeting, the Reserves dominated the early proceedings but didn’t, this time, fall behind after
just a minute. In keeping with the pattern established at Cheltenham Road the previous week, numerous chances were created
but none were converted. The best of these fell to captain Craig Mortiboys, who rounded the home ‘keeper but saw his
shot from an acute angle cleared off the line, James Mole, who latched on to a clever through ball but produced a lob that
beat both the ‘keeper and the bar, by a couple of inches, and Scott Saurin, who blasted too high from 6 yards after
good work from Rob Vaughan.

| James Mole attacks the Woodmancote defence |
It seemed as if again, just like the first
game, the team would live to rue these misses when their hosts opened the scoring with a double strike after half an hour.
The first saw the home side catch the Reserves defensive line high and square for the first time all evening, leaving a one-on-one
opportunity that their striker never looked like missing. However, the second, a minute later, involved the referee over-ruling
an offside flag from Guy Tyrrell, in the build up to the ball being walked into the net. This compared starkly with the "goal"
by Tim Jones that had been ruled out after quarter of an hour when the home linesman flagged so early that the free-kick that
provoked the incident nearly hadn’t been taken! Nevertheless, all these things even themselves up in the end, as they
say!!! Fortunately, the team was not two goals down for long, as the arrears were halved when Rob Vaughan turned the
ball home from 10 yards following a corner that Woodmancote failed to deal with properly. Still the Reserves held the advantage
with both territory and possession and, finally, they made it count when an excellent cross from Sam Bunker was turned onto
the underside of his own crossbar by the defender who was attempting to mark James Mole. When the ball bounced down, the referee
was convinced that it had crossed the line and that made it all square at half time.

| Craig Mortiboys & Andy Morris-Jinks attack a corner |
The Reserves remained on the
front foot after the break, now enjoying the advantage of playing down the slope and looking dangerous every time they went
forward. Even though they took the lead only 9 minutes into the second half, numerous opportunities to score had already been
spurned and it needed a penalty, awarded after a home defender had handled the ball following a corner, to break the deadlock,
Scott Saurin sending the ‘keeper the wrong way as he powered the ball into the corner of the net. 10 minutes later,
it was 4-2, Andy Morris-Jinks timing his run perfectly to turn yet another excellent corner from Tim Jones into the net, and
it could have been a lot more. As the match wore on, Scott Saurin again fired over, Dan Robinson passed when he was clear
through, only to see Rob Vaughan fail to capitalise and Craig Mortiboys headed just over. In
the end, though, the team was delighted to pocket its first points of the season and will, now, be looking forward with renewed
confidence.
