The First team travelled all the way to The Newlands to take on Stroud FC (the club formerly known as Newton Heath)
in the team’s second Northern Senior League Division One fixture of the season and found themselves two goals to the
good before most spectators (well, alright, Herb’s Dad) had arrived at the ground. The very first attack of the match
resulted in a corner. Taken by Shaun Gluyas on the right, the delivery into the box caused major problems in the home defence
and, after a melee during which Stroud rarely came close to clearing the ball, Steve Conway stabbed home his second goal of
the season from close range with just over a minute showing on the clock. Three minutes later, it was 2-0, a huge goal
kick from Ben McHardie-Jones catching the Stroud rearguard completely unawares, allowing Chris Peach to race in behind the
back line and slot past the advancing goal-keeper with relative comfort.
Shell-shocked, the home side gradually started to get a foot hold in the game. They reduced the arrears
in the 21st minute, when one of the smallest players on the field headed home from close range following a cross from the
right, giving Breeza, in goal, no chance. The rest of the half remained relatively even, with Shaun Gluyas going close and
Andy Morris-Jinks heading just over but the break arrived with the score still at 2-1 Stroud made the better start to
the second half, dominating territorially and having the better share of the possession as they went in search of the equaliser.
After an hour of the game, they thought that they had it, when James Gowing heroically cleared a pile driver off of the line
but, 6 minutes later, the scores were tied. Steve Piper was adjudged to have taken a defensive throw from the wrong place
and the home side’s own throw-in was then headed back across the area before being lashed into the corner of the visitor’s
net. The perceived injustice of the foul throw call spurred the Firsts into action and they went close immediately,
Rick Redfearn shooting just wide after an excellent move. With 13 minutes left, the lead was re-established as Michael Bolton
turned home his first goal for the club following a free kick and, as the game entered stoppage time, this seemed to have
won the points for the away side. Another long throw proved to be their undoing, however, as an unchallenged Steve Piper stetched
to head it away but, in doing so, only succeeded in turning the ball into his own net to make it 3-3.
