The
Reserves opened their second Division One campaign in the worst possible fashion, conceding a goal to a well organised and
committed Woodmancote side within a minute of the kick-off. The recovery from this early set back was steady, however, and
the side should have been back on level terms after 20 minutes when Dan Robinson spurned an opportunity to turn the ball into
an empty net after John Marchant’s shot on the turn had come back off a post. The full implications of this miss were
emphasised within seconds, as Woodmancote broke immediately, tearing through the home rear guard and giving Sam Bastow, in
goal, no chance with a clinical finish.
Matters got worse before the break, when Woodmancote’s
third goal was smacked into the bottom corner of Sam’s net amid loud claims and protests that the scorer had handled
the ball before shooting. However, such matters should not have been a concern as the Reserves had enjoyed more than enough
openings themselves to have ensured that their territorial advantage was reflected in the scoreline. The visitor’s goalkeeper,
who was returning for his first match following shoulder surgery last autumn, had an exceptional night, however, and produced
a string of fine saves, such as those from Rob Vaughan, John Marchant, Tim Jones and Scott Saurin, to ensure that his side
preserved their three goal advantage going into the break. A tactical change at half time saw Rob Vaughan withdrawn
and Craig Mortiboys pushed into a more advanced position and this brought dividends with just over a quarter of an hour to
go, when Craig produced some excellent control before notching his side’s first goal of the evening with a shot that
went in off the post. Unfortunately, by this time the Reserves were already 4-0 down, having conceded further from a twice-taken
penalty. Scott Saurin made it 4-2 when he produced an excellent lob over the advancing keeper with just over 10 minutes left
but, in the end, the team left themselves just too much to do to get back into the match. There is plenty to ponder, however,
before the return fixture at Woodmancote next Tuesday!!
