After a slow start to the season, all 3 sides are now back in action and I thought (edit: Nick thought) it was probably
time to write another edition of the much anticipated, highly innovative, thought provoking piece that is Moley’s Monthly.
With October well and truly upon us it seems that we are finally through what has now become the annual monsoon season that
causes havoc with our early season fixtures. On the up side, though, as a result the third team did manage to get three weeks
into the season this year without dropping any points (Cheers for that one Nick! J ) and I understand
that this meant that they were then better placed in the League table, having played no games at all, than they ever were
at any time during the course of the year when Dunney was last manager (Thanks again Nick! J )
My introduction to full time team management has been much smoother than when I last managed the side on a caretaker basis
during Roachie’s Managerial Regime a few years ago. Asked to settle the ship at the end of the season, I oversaw a two
game spell in which we conceded 12 goals and scored none!! This time round I have left nothing to chance and I have been reading
up on tips from the great managers from all their various books. Thanks to the example set by Bobby Robson, I now refer to
Sam Bunker as Guy and Guy Tyrell as Sam. Other tips I have adopted include the extension of Cloughie’s philosophy, of
insisting that the players had a drink on a Friday night to make sure they had a good nights sleep, to my equivalent, which
was sending Jamie away on a weekend’s drinking trip to Spain. Yep those 6 goals he scored straight afterwards were down
to good management!
In other football news, you may have noticed that the GFA have introduced a "Respect the Ref" campaign to help with the
recruitment and retention of referees. The guidance document covers everything required to attract referees, from a handy
6 point explanation of the role of the captain to a paragraph defining the term "Respect"! Ok, so the document does not mention
that Referees are paid a pittance to stand in the pouring rain while getting abuse yelled at them from angry young men who
would otherwise be in the pub or prison; it does, however, include a 5 point guide and explanatory diagram on how to shake
hands before the game!!!!
The whole campaign could only have generated less of an impact if the GFA had included an MP3 of Local Refs singing the
famous Aretha Franklin hit of the same name.
Anyway, rant over, here is:
Moley’s Plug of the Month –
In Moley’s monthly I will always try to give a shout to local businesses in need of some support, especially when
two of our own players are involved.
For those of you who maybe interested; Matt Harvey and Mike Thompson have moved in together and they have taken over the
Brothel in Millbrook Street. The pair will be offering competitive rates and no job is too big or small.
Disclaimer - For the benefit of those who are employed as teachers-
The above article is nonsense and whilst they have moved into a former brothel they have not and will not be opening their
‘doors’ for business.
The happy couple are merely living together as lovers, which is certainly not illegal - except in some States of America.
And finally……
Social Event Announcement
Race Night at the Strand 25th October -
I am happy, through the medium of "Moley’s Monthly", to draw your attention to the fact that the first social event
of the 2008/2009 Season will soon be upon us!! A Race Night is to be held in The Strand pub in Cheltenham (it’s
on the High Street) on Saturday 25th October at 7.15pm.
A night at the races is a fantastic fundraising event for the club. If you’ve not been to one before the basic
idea is that you are betting on horse races which are shown on the big screen. The races are chosen at random so we
do not know the winners. You are given odds and play with real money so there is a chance for you to win some cash as
well. Its really good fun and also should raise a decent sum of money for the club too!
Tickets are £3 per person and are payable in advance, please. If you could let Frank Ashworth know as soon as possible
if you can make it, so that he has an idea of numbers, then that would be brilliant. One final thing to mention is that
Glenn Price, ‘The Compere without Compare’, will be hosting the evening and will also be providing a special DJ
Set for on the night. (‘DJ Set’ may be stretching it a bit but you know what he’s like…..)
